French Empire

The Empire fashion originated in the pregnancy of the Empress Josephine. She found it convenient to wear dresses with a high waistline, just below the breasts. This design made her pregnancy less obvious. Other women soon discovered that a woman didn't need to be pregnant to look good in this kind of dress--which made the breasts more visible than the waist--and the "Empire" fashion was established. This period coincided with the English Regency. Regency fashions sometimes copied Empire fashions.
